Little Rock data center rules move forward as questions continue

Data center regulation has quickly become one of Little Rock’s biggest local government issues.

The city has moved from proposal to adopted ordinance after the Little Rock Board of Directors approved new rules for data centers. The vote followed a public comment period that lasted nearly two hours, with residents raising concerns about how large-scale technology projects could affect neighborhoods, infrastructure, utilities, and quality of life.

The ordinance gives Little Rock a clearer local framework for reviewing data center projects, but the broader debate is not over. Residents are still asking questions about power demand, water use, environmental impact, noise, zoning, and how much authority local governments have under state law.

The issue has gained urgency as major data center projects draw attention across Central Arkansas, including planned development tied to the Port of Little Rock. Supporters often point to economic development and investment, while critics want stronger safeguards before large facilities move forward.
