Medicare open enrollment is underway through December 7, 2026, giving beneficiaries an opportunity to compare health and prescription drug coverage for 2027. Changes selected during this period generally take effect January 1, 2027.

Even if you like your current plan, it is worth reviewing its Annual Notice of Change. Premiums, deductibles, pharmacy arrangements, drug formularies and provider networks can change from one year to the next.

Start with the total cost, not just the advertised premium

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) projects that the national average Medicare Advantage plan premium will decline in 2027. That is an average across plans, not a guarantee of lower bills for every Arkansas enrollee.

Compare monthly premiums, deductibles, office-visit copayments, prescription costs and maximum out-of-pocket limits. A zero-premium plan may still carry significant costs when you use care.

Confirm your doctors and hospitals

If you have Medicare Advantage, check whether your primary physician, specialists and preferred hospitals participate in the specific 2027 plan. Ask both the insurer and provider, and confirm whether referrals or prior authorization apply.

Do not assume last year's provider network will remain unchanged. Recent network disputes involving Arkansas hospitals show why this matters.

Check each prescription

Enter your actual medications and preferred pharmacies into Medicare's Plan Finder to compare Part D formularies, coverage restrictions and expected annual spending.

CMS also operates a temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge for some eligible Part D beneficiaries. Qualifying patients may access certain GLP-1 medications with a $50 copayment through that program, which is separate from ordinary Part D coverage. Eligibility and covered products are restricted; ask your clinician and Medicare for details.

What about deductibles and new benefits?

Deductibles and benefits vary among plans, and some Medicare cost figures are determined nationally. Review official 2027 plan documents rather than relying on a broad headline about increases or savings.

Check dental, vision, hearing, transportation and other supplemental benefits carefully, including any limits or participating-provider requirements.

Five steps before December 7

1. Find your plan's Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage for 2027.

2. List your doctors, medical facilities and prescriptions.

3. Compare total yearly costs and restrictions using the Medicare Plan Finder.

4. Ask questions about any change that could interrupt treatment or prescriptions.

5. Save a copy of your selection confirmation and relevant plan documents.

Visit Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) for official assistance. Local, unbiased State Health Insurance Assistance Program counseling may also be available.
