Pulaski County chooses a new chief executive

Voters elected retired Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen as Pulaski County judge on Tuesday, November 3. Griffen, a Democrat, defeated Republican Michael Rushin in a decisive countywide contest, according to local election reporting.

The reported margin

KUAR reported that Griffen received roughly 65% of the vote to Rushin's 34% in election-night returns. These figures describe reported unofficial totals and may be adjusted during canvassing. Griffen succeeds County Judge Barry Hyde, whom he defeated in the Democratic primary earlier in the election cycle.

Why the office matters

In Arkansas, the county judge is the county's chief executive, responsible for county administration and important public works functions. The job is distinct from the circuit judgeship Griffen previously held. County leadership shapes budgeting, facilities, roads and administration, as well as implementation of county ordinances.

The data center connection

Griffen played a leading role in drafting regulations for large data centers in Pulaski County. In late October, the Quorum Court overrode Hyde's veto of the ordinance by a 10–4 vote. Developer ADP Little Rock Data Hub LLC, associated with AVAIO Digital's project near Wrightsville, subsequently filed a federal lawsuit challenging the regulations. Those claims remain allegations before the court; the election does not resolve the lawsuit.

A transition to watch

The incoming administration will face decisions about financial oversight, infrastructure, the county's relationship with businesses and residents, and the handling of the data center dispute. Readers should watch for transition announcements, appointments, budget proposals and legal developments.
