Medicare beneficiaries who rely on White River Health in north-central Arkansas should review their coverage carefully during this fall's enrollment period.

The Batesville-based health system says its doctors and hospitals are expected to be out of network with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans starting January 1, 2027 if a new agreement is not reached.

UnitedHealthcare states that negotiations remain active and that its current Medicare Advantage contract with White River Health continues through December 31, 2026.

What patients should know now

Affected members continue to have in-network access through the end of 2026 under the current agreement.

Beginning in 2027, access and costs could change if negotiations do not produce a new contract.

White River Health and UnitedHealthcare have published somewhat different descriptions of how group retiree plans would be affected, so retirees should verify their exact plan with the insurer and health system rather than assume an exemption.

UnitedHealthcare says employer-sponsored commercial insurance arrangements are not affected by these Medicare Advantage negotiations.

Review plans before December 7

Medicare's annual enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7, with 2027 plan changes typically taking effect January 1.

Before changing coverage, compare your preferred doctors and hospitals, medications, premiums, referrals, prior authorization and total expected out-of-pocket costs.

White River Health lists several other plans it expects to accept in 2027, but availability and network participation must be confirmed for each individual plan.

For guidance, contact the White River Area Agency on Aging at 870-612-3000, or a trusted Medicare adviser.

White River Health also provides updates at whiteriverhealth.org/UHC and by telephone at 870-262-3777.

Why this matters beyond Batesville

Families throughout Arkansas may have relatives receiving care at White River Health facilities.

The story is a timely reminder that Medicare Advantage networks can change from year to year, even when the health plan's name stays the same.

Check current information before enrollment decisions, since negotiations could still change the outcome.
